Properties

5086 aluminum plate has high strength capacity than 5052 and 5083 aluminum plate, but it is not strengthened by heat treatment, instead becoming stronger due to strain hardening or cold mechanical working of the material.3.0%-4.5% of magnesium is added to 5086 aluminum plate, which enable it to have high strength. Heat treatment does not strongly affect the strength, so 5086 aluminum plate can be readily welded and retain most of its mechanical strength. 5086 aluminum plate mainly has four tempers that are vastly used, including 5086-H, 5086-H32, 5086-H112 as well as 5086-H116.

Applications

5086 aluminum plate is primarily alloyed with magnesium. Forming characteristics are best with the alloy in the O temper. Machinability in the strain hardened tempers is relatively good. In the annealed (O temper) machining is difficult, but still can be accomplished. For its chemical contents, 5086 aluminum plate has good weld-ability and resistance to salt water correction, which making itself popular for vessel gangways and building boat. However, 5086 aluminum plate has a tendency to undergo stress correction cracking and is not used much in aircraft construction as a result.
